on the introduction of Maliki law into the Iberian Peninsula, the Geschichte-s of C. Brockelmann
and F. Sezgin in their volumes devoted to al-Andalus, and, of course, the Encyclopaedia of
Islam. Although these works have great value, some of them are now more than a century old,
some are limited to a single historical period, and others include only one type of information. A
scholar is forced to supplement the data that they offer, a task that requires a large investment of
time, and in the knowledge that if later on a line of research or mere curiosity leads him or her to
a new genre, period, or figure, the same effort will have to be made again, often by consulting
the same sources or reference works.
This state of affairs has improved considerably in recent years. In Casablanca, Morocco,
the Fondation du Roi Abdul-Aziz al-Saoud pour les Études Islamiques et les Sciences Humaines
began a series of initiatives designed to fill these very gaps: the database Ibn Rouchd of
bibliographic references on the Islamic West, and the project to compile reference works on the

intellectual output of the same region. The year 1996 saw the publication of an encyclopedia of
notable Maghrebis which included many Andalusis, given the high degree of mobility of ,ulamā’

across the Straits, especially from the Almoravid period onward. Soon afterward the Mawsūᶜāt
22
aᶜlām al-ᶜulama’ wa-l-udabā’ al-ᶜarab wa-l-muslimīn began to appear. In 2004 the first volume
of the Biblioteca de al-Andalus was published, under the auspices of the Fundación Ibn Tufayl,

after an earlier attempt made by the Fundación El Legado Andalusí. The Biblioteca de al-

Andalus, part of the more ambitious work Enciclopedia de la Cultura Andalusí, completed
publication in 2013 with a total of 2481 entries devoted to Andalusi authors (Muslim, Christian
25
and Jewish). This work, the product of contributions by a great number of scholars who were
